Description:

Keep Fido Healthy with Pup-Safe Floral Choices

It’s National Dog Day! Dog-lovers far and wide are giving their pride-and-joy a chance to strut on long walks, to play a satisfying game of fetch, to roam the dog park with gusto, and to enjoy special treats.

Celebrating Dog Day with a pup-friendly bouquet? Or are you simply covering the smell of dog breath with aromatic flowers? Many pet lovers are surprised to find that not all flowers and plants are safe to keep around pets. It may go without saying that no decorative flower or plant should be consumed in excess by dogs (or cats, for that matter!) If you have an inquisitive fur friend or puppy who can’t be trusted not to sample anything left in sight, it’s a good idea to brush up on which plants are non-toxic to have around dogs. Here are a few tips around pet safety to keep your good boy healthy.

A few popular plants and flowers that are toxic to dogs include:

  • Eucalyptus. Unless you’re keeping it near an open window or high above snout range, this delicious smelling leaf, often seen as a floral accent, can cause instant negative symptoms in dogs just by smelling it.
  • Poinsettias. The holiday favorite is neutral in smell and makes for an easy addition to any room, but the results can be dangerous if your pup consumes it.
  • Tulips. This is also on the avoid-at-all-costs list for dogs. Fortunately, tulips are delicate and easy to place far out of a smaller dog’s reach. Again, if your pooch is known to put paws on the kitchen counter or knock vases from a credenza with a firm wag of the tail, steer clear of tulips.

Here are some of our favorite dog-safe options:

  • Roses. Yet another accolade to add to our favorite bloom – they’re chemically harmless to pets. This is good news – not only can you keep your vases stocked with a different shade of rose for every season of the year, but you also need not worry when your pup ventures for a sniff of rose bushes on a walk around the neighborhood.
  • Gerbera Daisies. The team at Allen Flower Market loves Gerberas in arrangements for all occasions. Their sturdy composition and rich petal profile make Gerberas a gorgeous fit for celebrations, expressions of gratitude, and messages of love. Greet the dog-lovers in your life with a multicolored Gerbera Vase with confidence that both dog parent and pup can enjoy your gift.
  • Orchids. The ASPCA favors orchids in pets’ homes because they’re perhaps they’ve been proven harmless again and again, even if your dog ventures a nibble. Orchids are chic, long-lasting, and make excellent gifts for men, women, and people of all ages. At Allen’s Flower Market, we have an extensive menu of exotic orchids in purple, white, yellow, pink, and more.
  • Sunflowers. Does your dog also feel a burst of joy when gazing upon a vase of Sunny Sunflowers? We may never know for sure – but we do know that sunflowers are a perfectly pet-safe plant to keep in the house.

If you’re ever unsure, spray a bit of white vinegar on your petals and plants. Dogs will stay far away – and vinegar has the added benefit of prolonging flowers’ freshness.
