The daughter of one of these organizers, Anna Jarvis, officially proposed to create a Mother’s Day in honor of the hard work and sacrifices mothers dealt with in service of their children and families. Jarvis was intent on honoring women in a society that so often celebrated men. By 1912, Mother’s Day was commonly observed in many states. In 1914, it was officially instated the second Sunday in May.
