Spotlight on August’s Finest Seasonal Blooms

Spotlight on August’s Finest Seasonal Blooms

Description:

The Flowers that Thrive During the Summer

Have you ever noticed how as the seasons change, the colors of nature reveal new hues, as well? A flower or plant’s ideal time of year is called its growing season, the time of year when the weather, temperature, humidity, and amount of sunlight create the best conditions for a plant to grow. Growing seasons vary depending on where in the world you live and how much the climate varies. Growing seasons are not necessarily the same as our four seasons – summer, fall, winter, and spring – but to make things simpler, we’ve collected some of our favorite flowers whose growing season is right now, and who tend to thrive in our beautiful Southern California summer.

Begonias

These striking flowers unfurl into pillowy, delicate blooms that appear in multiple colors and textures, depending on which species of Begonia you choose. August is the perfect time for Begonias because it falls directly in the middle of their growing season. We love how Begonias look in our joyful Blooming Basket Garden, where we pair them with Kalanchoe and textural African Violets to create a high-impact gift or decorative accent.

Marigolds

These electric orange blooms are in their heyday between early summer and late fall – though in non-freezing climates, they can grow year-round. We love embellishing our homes and cultural attractions with marigolds around Dia de Los Muertos – but why wait until November 1? Ask for a marigold accent in your next Allen’s Flower Market bouquet.

Dahlias

Like Begonias, August is prime time for the gorgeous Dahlia. Gardeners and florists prize this prismatic bloom – many consider it to be the most attractive, popular flower. Dahlias grow in almost every color, and their flower heads can grow up to a foot in diameter in the right environment. We recommend the soft salmon-hued Dahlias in our Peachy bouquet, where these queen blooms are nestled among other premium flowers such as ranunculus, gerbera daisies, and green ball dianthus.

Delphinium

Delphiniums are related to Larkspurs and grow on tall spikes, making them an elegant addition to bouquets and centerpieces. This indigo-colored, understated beauty grows taller the earlier it was planted. Delphiniums that went into the ground in the early spring will be at their peak height and grandeur in August – but they can grow just about any time. Blue can be a challenging color to find in nature, which makes Delphiniums the perfect addition to any blue-themed event or holiday. A statement arrangement like our Magical Moonlight showcases the powerful color of these flowers by contrasting them with bright white and silvery mums and snapdragons.

 Gerbera Daisies

Ah, the cheery Gerbera. These warm, refreshing flowers are a staff favorite at Allen’s Flower Market and are sure to bring a smile to whoever receives them. Native to South Africa, the Gerbera Daisy behaves a bit like a sunflower – it will turn toward the sun if placed by a window. These flowers are also particularly good at absorbing airborne toxins and purifying indoor air. You’ll find Gerbera Daisies in all sorts of lively colors in many of our arrangements – but if you want the full experience, we can’t recommend our pure Gerbera Daisy Vase highly enough. This vase features white, orange, pink, dark red, and yellow gerberas, giving you a full range of Gerbera splendor.
