This Sunday, Observe the Feast of the Assumption with Flowers

Description:

In Catholic tradition, this Sunday is a very special day. The Feast of the Assumption celebrates the moment when the holy Virgin Mary was assumed – or fully integrated, body and soul – into heaven. Unlike Christ, Mary did not ascend to heaven; instead, she was assumed as a humble mortal person. In this liturgical holiday, the church celebrates the everlasting life of the holy family and the profound wonder and magical event of Christ’s mortal mother beginning her life in eternity. The Assumption reveals a powerful message to Catholic believers: Christ keeps his promise of eternal life to those who are faithful. The dogma of this date is relatively new in history – it was codified in 1950- however, leaders in the church have recognized the significance of the Assumption for centuries.

How can Catholic families observe Mary’s Assumption? In addition to attending Mass or safely participating in a remotely held Mass, there are a number of rituals and observances that specifically honor Mary.

1. Have A Feast

The Feast of the Assumption falls on a harvest moment. The fresh bounty of the summer season connects many of the folk traditions with Catholic reverence. Because Mary is a bridge between the mortal and divine worlds, there is a spirit of humbleness and earthiness that characterizes her celebrations. Simple meals that feature fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruits are ideal for a Feast of the Assumption. In fact, a unique tradition falls on this day called the Blessing of Fruits and Herbs. The “first fruits” are symbolic, sacred gifts associated with this late summer harvest. Think Thanksgiving, but in the summertime. If you are able to gather safely, it is an excellent day to bask in the warm weather with friends and family, hold a garden party, or bring the outdoors in with lush floral décor. Fill your recipes with grapes and berries to keep true to the biblical representations of Mary, who was often depicted with vines.

2. Plant Mary in the Garden

Whether or not a literal feast makes sense for you this year, there are plenty of ways to honor Mary. A votive sculpture or candle bearing Mary’s image is well-placed among leaves, vines, herbs, and flowers, symbolic of the exquisite, timeless quality of life on earth. Adorn your household depictions of Mary with flowers – a floral crown or white bouquet make for beautiful offerings.

3. Make a Procession

Did you know that Catholic cities in Europe celebrate the Assumption with a procession? In Siena, the town fills up with a festive, sometimes raucous parade of people and horses to the town cathedral, where Mary is crowned with flowers. Get the family involved in a fun (or solemn) walk that embodies the generous spirit of the Mother of Heaven.

Are you looking for flowers to add your special touch to the Feast of the Assumption? White flowers are Mary’s liturgical color – and our Lilies of the Field bouquet is the perfect blend of expansive white lilies with fragrant eucalyptus leaves. Depending on how traditional you are, pastel bouquets are an equally beautiful way to bring some summer energy into your home. A true spirit of the garden comes through in our Wildflower fields, where delicate orange lilies are nestled alongside soft pink carnations and mild snapdragons.
