Did you know that #IWD has been around for over 100 years? Organizers in the United States put together the first National Women’s Day in February 1909, and two years later, communities in Europe joined to form an International Women’s Day with participants in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Denmark.

International Women’s Day was the occasion for an organized protest in Russia in 1917, which led to women earning equal voting rights. These days, the event can take the form of organized events, conferences, city festivities, and in some places is combined with Mother’s Day. The United Nations officially recognized the holiday in 1975.
