Why Spring Daffodils Deserve Respect

Description:

A Deep Dive on the Sunny Daffodil

March’s birthday flower is the daffodil. This beloved spring flower is one of the first blooms to appear at the spring season’s beginning. Remember when Willy Wonka used a candy daffodil as a teacup as he brought children into his chocolate factory? There are many reasons why the daffodil has become an iconic bloom, and its rich history dates back thousands of years.

The daffodil has been cultivated for centuries, and there are now thousands of different varieties, ranging in color from white to yellow to orange. Early art and archaeological finds tell us that the daffodil probably originated in Spain and Portugal and was known and cherished by the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Greek mythology, the daffodil was associated with the story of Narcissus, an attractive young man who fell in love with his reflection in a pool of water and eventually turned into a flower. This is how the daffodil received its scientific name, Narcissus. The Roman army eventually introduced daffodils to regions throughout Europe, where they became associated with many cultural traditions in England, France, and Holland.

The Dutch are particularly well-known for their daffodil breeding, and the flower is an integral part of the country’s horticultural industry. In fact, the name ‘daffodil’ comes from a Dutch phrase that means ‘that which arrives early’ in honor of how quickly daffodils bloom each spring. Because it blooms at such a reliable moment each year, the daffodil is often used to symbolize rebirth and new beginnings. For example, in Christian traditions, it is associated with Easter and the resurrection of Jesus.

Do the March birthdays in your life adore daffodils? If so, let them know that they are participating in a special part of history and mythology with each daffodil they enjoy.
