Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day and was designated as such on November 11, 1919, after the United States and its Allies reached a peaceful end to World War I. Shortly after this date, Armistice Day was officially recognized as a day to observe those who had served in that war – and at the close of World War II, politicians decided to include all veterans who have served in the observance. In 1954, Congress made an amendment to acknowledge the date as Veterans Day rather than Armistice Day.

Because of the origins of the date and the sweeping involvements of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, other countries also recognize November 11 as a moment of commemoration. Canada, the UK and Australia, for instance, all refer to the date as “Remembrance Day.”
