Mark your calendar - this Sunday, April 4, is Easter Sunday! Get ready for the end of the somber Lent season and the emergence of joyous religious celebrations. In keeping with the feeling and spirit of Spring, Easter celebrates rebirth, renewal, and new life. In Christian traditions all over the world, communities celebrate the resurrection of the son of God. Meanwhile, trees bloom in the world around us, flowers peak, and the days grow longer. The feeling of renewal and awakening that comes with the Easter season is unmistakable.

Easter's Meaning Over Time

The name "Easter" comes from the Latin phrase for an early Christian festivity called "in albis," or "dawn," a term that has evolved over the years. Not only is Easter the rising of a special sun – it carries the enormous significance of redemption and forgiveness for all of humanity. With Easter, there is a powerful sense of hope and opportunity. Misfortune and negativity are rinsed away with the arrival of a new, cleansed world.

So, where did the bunny and egg-hunt concepts come from? While you may not find any stories of painted eggs or Easter candy in the New Testament, some seasonal clues can help us connect the Easter bunny, the hunt for treasure (eggs), and the season of renewal. Many point to the way rabbits seem to be everywhere in the Spring months. The true reason bunnies are associated with Easter dates back to an 18th-century German custom where a rabbit was said to leave gifts for children. Some theories suggest that the gifting rabbit is rooted in Anglo-Saxon pagan worship of a goddess called Eostre, whose feast happens to be celebrated around the same time as Easter. The use of eggs hearkens back to symbols of life, fertility, and abundance.

You may have taken note that Easter Sunday happens on a different day each year. This, too, is rooted in history. When the Roman Council of Nicaea was finalizing the holy days in the calendar year, they decided that Easter should happen after the first full moon in the Spring season, following the Spring equinox. You'll notice that Easter Sunday never overlaps with Passover – this is because the Council also determined that if Easter interfered with Passover, it should happen the following Sunday. This means that Easter can fall anywhere between late March and the end of April.

Make Easter an Elegant Occasion with Flowers

Easter is a time for celebration, emergence from the dutiful Lent season, and the somber observation of Holy Week. When Easter arrives, an energizing party of pastels brings cheer to families and entire communities. There is no wrong answer when it comes to selecting Easter blooms – and the team at Allen's Flower Market is here to help you choose the most fitting flowers for the season.

White flowers have a legendary history in relation to Easter celebrations. Some traditions claim that white lilies emerged where biblical figures shed tears and sweat. White lilies, often referred to as Easter lilies, are traditionally linked with Easter Sunday's religious observance. White lilies are an unwavering symbol of purity and hope and are typically associated with the resurrection. Allen's Flower Market has a variety of pure white lily arrangements, such as the stately Winter White Lilies, where the tall stemmed blooms make a powerful statement. We also have more eclectic options with white lilies tucked in among other lush, soft petals, such as the white hydrangeas in our Bounty of Beauty arrangement or pale pink rose accents in our Arrive in Style bouquet. White tulips, another suitable Easter option, are known to represent divine forgiveness. Or, for a sophisticated take on white petals, consider a bouquet of chic Calla Lilies such as the memorable Forever Calla Lilies arrangement.

At Allen's Flower Market, we have an entire Spring floral menu that highlights the Easter season's bursting colors and emphatic combinations of blooms.
