Valentine’s Day has a Surprising History

Valentine’s Day has a Surprising History

Description:

Ever wonder how we came to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is the best day of the year to recognize romance, love, and companionship – and while today we associate it with lush bouquets, chocolates and candlelit dinners for two, the origin of the holiday is less charming than you might expect!

The earliest record of a midwinter celebration of love dates back to the Ancient Greeks, who participated in a sort of speed-dating ritual called Lupercalia, which involved dancing, chasing partners around in costumes and playful partnerships between men and women. Fast forward many hundreds of years to Saint Valentine, whose feast day became a part of Catholic celebration around 500 AD, and whose story is part history, part legend. Valentine famously offered secret weddings to Roman soldiers who were otherwise forbidden to marry and could be recognized as an ally to lovers by a ring he wore with Cupid inscribed on it.

In more recent history, Valentine’s Day cards and gifts first started appearing in the 19th century. In giving flowers, chocolates and treats this February 14, you’re participating in a long-standing tradition, not to mention one of our favorite holidays of the year at Allen’s Flower Market!

For all Southern California customers,( especially night owls)  Allen’s Flower Market in Long Beach will be open 24 hours from February 13th to February 14th. We look forward to the tradition of serving our customers free tacos from 8 pm to 3 am from  Tacos Don Chon. This popular event has been honored for 10 years.
