Why Spring is a Great Time for Houseplants

Description:

Turn Over a New Leaf This Spring with Houseplants

Springtime marks the magic moment when we all get to enjoy nature’s great awakening outdoors – why not bring some of this rich beauty into your home? There are all kinds of meaningful benefits associated with houseplants. In many ways, Spring feels like a season of renewal and rebirth. In fact, for many cultures, it is the blooming time of Spring – not January 1 – that represents the beginning of a new cycle or a new year. It’s a time to set goals, clean the dust off of old things, start new projects, and prepare for the fun of the summer months.

Make houseplants a part of your spring spruce-up – Allen’s Flower Market has your needs covered with delicate, soothing, leafy potted plants that will light up any room.

Spring Cleaning for Indoor Air

Sure, you’ve thought about Spring cleaning for your home – but have you considered giving a puff of fresh oxygen into your indoor breathing space? Believe it or not, indoor air pollutants are all too often the sneaky cause of allergies, congestion, fatigue, headaches, and sleeplessness. Your home or office may have low-quality indoor air, whether or not you are fully aware of it. Some indoor air pollutants come from the outdoors, such as smoke and pesticides. Typical sources of indoor air pollution include aging building materials like insulation and drywall, vapors from wood varnishes and carpet glues, and cleaning products.

Whether or not you are actively experiencing the effects of poor indoor air quality, chances are your home would benefit from some fresh, healthy air. Houseplants work wonders for indoor air quality. A classic snake plant like our Sansevieria Geometricus acts as a powerful, natural air purifier – and it’s so robust, you hardly need to care for it.

Caring for Houseplants in Spring

Just as the seasons affect plants’ health outdoors, indoor plants can also be affected by the turning of the seasons. In general, plants respond beautifully to spring weather. Houseplants that have been droopy or wilted during the winter months can enjoy more sunshine, warmer temperatures, and a bit of extra humidity.

This month and throughout the Spring, your houseplants may benefit from an extra spritz of water. By giving plants a little more to drink than they’re used to, you’re helping your houseplants adjust to more sunshine. Plus, with warmer temperatures, water will evaporate more quickly out of a plant’s soil. If you are looking for ways to help plants retain their moisture, consider adding a layer of rocks to the top of the soil. Another way to protect plants from excess light and heat is to pull them away from windows, where they may have thrived during the winter months. Or, if your home gets a lot of natural light, consider light curtains to diffuse the amount of light your plants get so that they don’t become scorched. Spring is when you’re most likely to notice your plants stretching out in the direction of the sun. When you see this happening, gently rotate your plant once a week to encourage direct light on all parts of the plant.

Lastly, consider Spring cleaning your plants themselves! Pruning a plant’s leaves to remove dead or wilted plant bits helps target nutrients to the healthy parts of your plants and will also prevent pests or plant disease from taking root. If you’ve had your plant for more than a year, consider re-potting it into a larger container if it’s grown significantly. Or, if you decide not to use a new container, re-pot your plant in its existing container with fresh soil or potting mix.
