Get Festive to Ring In Fat Tuesday!
Mardi Gras is here – Turn Up the Fun with Flowers!
If you’ve ever been in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you know that Louisianans with a natural flair for letting the good times roll do not skimp on costume flair, décor, and extravagance. Beads, masks, bells, and trinkets are essential to decorating your body, parade float, or King Cake. If you don’t happen to be in the Big Easy for this day of pomp and ceremony, we have some ideas to inspire a Fat Tuesday party:
- Pick your color scheme. Purple, green, and gold are significant in the Mardi Gras color repertoire, dating back to 1892 when an early “krewe,” or carnival organizer, gave special meaning to key colors. Purple symbolizes Justice; Green stands for Faith; Gold represents Power.
- Plan a spicy menu. Cajun-seasoned rice? Jumbo shrimp? Grilled okra? Yes please! Mardi Gras revelers need quality food to keep the good time rolling. Create a spread of tasty sides around a central main dish, soul-food style. Po-boy sandwiches make an excellent main course, as does jambalaya, deep-fried catfish, or a crawfish etouffee, for the adventurous chef. Closeout with some classic beignets dusted with powdered sugar, and your guests will feel transported to Creole country in no time.
- Keep the cool drinks flowing. No visit to New Orleans would be complete without a frosty daiquiri or hurricane, a fruity cocktail with fresh citrus juices and rum. Channel the Big Easy with a punch bowl full of this delightful drink.
- Offer some activities. You may not have an in-house brass band ready to play at your Mardi Gras party. Still, by cueing up a bit of Louis Armstrong on the sound system and giving your guests paper masks, beads, feathers, and any funky costumes you can find, you’ll be lining up for a backyard parade before you know it. Round out the festivities with a bit of Mardi Gras trivia.
At Allen’s Flower Market, we love nothing more than bringing festive floral design to life at the events that matter most. We are experts at working with specific colors to express creativity and stay true to the spirit of Mardi Gras. The colors of the season sing in our Rustic Lavender arrangement, a sweet blend of bright purple tulips with multicolored hydrangeas and greenery. Go all out with a statement piece like Mad About You, a statement piece with tender carnations, purple roses, and Green Yoko Ono poms. Our Mardi Gras centerpiece features an elegant Hurricane lamp decked with roses, golden-orange Gerbera Daisies, and cascading lily grass.
