How Do Succulents Keep Their Cool in the Summer?

How Do Succulents Keep Their Cool in the Summer?

Description:

Why our favorite native plants thrive in hot weather

At Allen’s Flower Market, we can’t get enough succulents. These perky, adorable plants make for beautiful interior decoration in pots and add an earthy, California touch to bouquets and floral arrangements, as well. Succulents are loveable because they are both adorable and resilient. With minimal care, a succulent can grow for years and become a long-term, quirky companion in your home or on your patio or balcony.

Like cactus plants, succulents thrive in hot, dry conditions. Unlike most leafy plants, they have a thick structure and shallow roots. Instead of searching for water and nutrients deep in the soil, succulents magically store a lot of the water they need to survive within their shapely foliage. This is why the bodies of many succulents have such distinct shapes – from the crystalline desert rose to the spikey snake plant to the finger-like pachyphytum.

Almost all succulent plants thrive with lots of sunlight and minimal water. If you live in a humid climate, your succulents will be happiest if you water them every two weeks or give them a nice spray with a bottle once a week. Those of us who live in California’s dry, warm climate are best off watering succulents once a week. As with any plant, rotate your succulent regularly to help it receive light from multiple angles and prevent it from growing off-kilter.

Do you collect these adorable plants? If you’re a succulent aficionado who treats your plants as though they were pets, take advantage of the warm summer days to give them a bit of time outdoors. Exposing your succulents to some broad range sunshine is excellent for the plants’ health and will give their leaves a healthy boost. It also allows plants’ soil to breathe and benefit from exposure to wind, which is a great way to protect succulents’ delicate roots – especially if you’re concerned that you’ve overwatered them. As with any plant, too much sun or heat can cause leaves to brown or burn – so avoid placing succulents in direct sunlight at the hottest hours of the day. If you want to be really careful, you can ease your succulents into these trips outdoors, starting with a couple of hours in the morning or evening, and working up to more time spent al fresco.
