International Women’s Day in History

While the hashtags are newer to us, International Women’s Day has been observed for over 100 years. Back in 1909, women organizers in the United States arranged the first-ever National Women’s Day. A short two years later, communities in Europe joined and officially formed International Women’s Day. At this point, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Denmark joined in the celebration.

In 1917, International Women’s Day gave rise to an organized protest in Russia in 1917, which was a crucial part of the journey to the moment women earned equal voting rights. To make the celebration truly global, the United Nations officially recognized IWD as a holiday in 1975. 

These days, we celebrate International Women’s Day through organized events, community gatherings, conferences, and city festivities. In some places, IWD is combined with Mother’s Day. International Women’s Day is especially important for business teams and emerging female leaders in work environments.
