Why are Marigolds Symbolic?

Why are Marigolds Symbolic?

Description:

Marigolds: Symbol of All Saint’s Day and Día de Los Muertos

The majestic marigold is a cheerful, resilient flower that makes for a beautiful set of stems and mixes well with other warm colored flowers in a bouquet. This November 1, in honor of All Saint’s Day and Día de los Muertos, we want to explore the history and culture behind this legendary bloom.

The Aztecs attributed magical powers to marigolds, using them for folk medicine and as a lucky charm during journeys across rivers or lakes. Marigolds first made it to the Americas when the Spanish explorers brought them to grow in monastery gardens. Marigolds are sturdy, brilliant in color and a natural deterrent of flies and other pests.

On Día de Los Muertos, Latin American cultures fill the streets with marigold garlands to celebrate the harvest season. This gorgeous “flower of the dead” is a reminder of joyful times across generations and is a strong source of cultural pride. Marigolds’ scent and dense ability to form a wall or color on cultural altars reflect the changing of the seasons and the beginning of the cooler months. Marigolds are commonly a brilliant orange color, but can also be bred in yellow and white. November 1 also marks All Saint’s Day, a Christian tradition that honors all the saints as well as family members who have passed.

Flowers are a beautiful way to memorialize those we love and to bring joy and fragrance into every celebration this Fall. At Allen’s Flower Market, we make a point of working with floral farms to offer the freshest flowers imaginable. Check out our specials on a variety of fresh fall flower arrangements.
